International Day of Remembrance for Holocaust Victims
International Day of Remembrance for Victims of the Holocaust is celebrated annually on January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945.
In Auschwitz-Birkenau, more than one million and one hundred thousand Jews, gypsies, Slavs, homosexuals, people with disabilities, communists were murdered – in the gas chambers, by hunger and disease, in the shootings and under torture.
This day, proclaimed by the UN as the International Day in Memory of Victims of the Holocaust, pays homage to the memory of all victims of the Holocaust and recalls the need to combat anti-Semitism, racism and all forms of discrimination and violence for that Auschwitz, the horrors of Nazi-fascism and war, will never be repeated.
