MUD Juvenil
#Inthisday, July 28, 1946, at the José Estevão Republican Center, the MUD Juvenil was formally constituted, after the evolution in April from the Academic Movement of Democratic Unity (MAUD) and, in October 1945, the creation of the Democratic Unity Movement (MUD). The MUD Juvenil will develop important actions to combat the dictatorship throughout 1947 and 1948, organize strikes and student protests, organize the youth week and the concentration in Bela Mandil, circulate the Youth Manifesto or give its support to the candidacy of General Norton de Matos. All this will inevitably result in the harsh persecution by the regime and the imprisonment of several of its elements.
In the MUD Juvenil Central Commission we found figures such as Francisco Salgado Zenha, Octávio Rodrigues Pato, José Borrego, Óscar dos Reis, Maria Fernanda Silva, Júlio Pomar, Mário Sacramento, Rui Grácio, António Abreu, Nuno Fidelino Figueiredo and Mário Soares, who would be the representative of youth at the MUD Central Commission. Many of these young people would pass through the regime’s prisons, namely the cells in Aljube.
