“Greve da Mala”

03 July 2023

#Inthisday On July 3, 1968, the three-day strike of Carris bus and streetcar workers in Lisbon, in which no fares were charged, came to an end.

The action would become known as “Mala Strike”, because the collectors had left at the stations the suitcases where the money from the sale of tickets was kept.
Since the 50’s Carris had been the stage of several struggles. Despite the repression, this protest action had great support from the population of Lisbon and the workers got an increase of 20 escudos a day.
