May 1st – Labor Day
A week after April 25, 1974, the first May 1st began in freedom, the largest demonstration ever in our country! On April 27, 1974, May 1st was decreed as a national holiday, the first legal achievement after the revolution.
In Lisbon, Alameda Afonso Henriques was a meeting point and the rally took place later at the Stadium, where many thousands of people gathered that day under the motto “Peace, Bread and Freedom!”.
Many cities and towns celebrated May 1st, this time without arrests and repression.
