Agostinho Neto
Agostinho Neto was born on September 17th 1922, in Kaxicane, Angola.
Early anti-colonialist, he participated in the Empire’s Student House, in the Youth MUD and in the creation of the African Studies Centre, with Amílcar Cabral, Mário Pinto de Andrade, Marcelino dos Santos and Francisco José Tenreiro.
He founded the Anti-colonial Movement, took over the leadership of the Movimento de Libertação Popular de Angola (MPLA), was arrested several times.
He was released in 1962, the same year in which he clandestinely left Portugal, with his wife and young children, arriving in Léopoldville (Kinshasa), where MPLA had its headquarters. He was the first president of independent Angola, after years of civil war. He died in 1979.
