Deportation

The Military Dictatorship and the Estado Novo resumed and amplified a secular practice of exiling and found in mass deportation a simple and effective way of dismantling the liberal State of Law and disabling the most intransigent opponents: Republicans, Socialists, trade unionists, communists, military rebels, journalists and men of letters or pure advocates of fundamental freedoms.
